History of the Library

The Nnamdi Azikiwe Library, University of Nigeria, is the second-oldest university library in Nigeria. The University Library opened in October 1960, temporarily occupying two tiny rooms in the Faculty of Education building. It started from scratch without inheriting a previously organized collection. During its early years, it was largely nurtured by generous donations, notably from the University’s first Chancellor, the Right Honourable Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, whose donations totalled well over 12,000 books, journal parts, and pamphlets covering many subjects.
