A Message from the Librarian

Librarian's Statement

Welcome to Nnamdi Azikiwe Library, a centre of intense intellectual inquiry that shares with the university, the aspiration to be the most dynamic learning environment in the world. To achieve this the library has within the last one year worked to ensure that our collections remain forward-looking, diverse in breadth, form, and format, and open to browsing and of world class and world –renowned quality resources.

The University library has constantly had the provision of resources for excellent scholarship in the university as a major pivot.

These resources now appear in different formats such as print, CD-Rom, microform, electronic, etc. The internet technology resolution has also made great impact on the formats of information resources. We now have e-books, e-journals, e-newspapers, etc, which are all accessible online.

Our major aim has remained to provide resources comprehensively and in different formats to support teaching, learning and research in the university.

Our Heritage

History of the Library

The Nnamdi Azikiwe Library, University of Nigeria, is the second-oldest university library in Nigeria. The University Library opened in October 1960, temporarily occupying two tiny rooms in the Faculty of Education building. It started from scratch without inheriting a previously organized collection. During its early years, it was largely nurtured by generous donations, notably from the University’s first Chancellor, the Right Honourable Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, whose donations totalled well over 12,000 books, journal parts, and pamphlets covering many subjects.
